Rare Vampire Book - 1897 DRACULA By BRAM STOKER 1st Edition!
OK, as far as "Vampire Collectibles" go you just don't get any more RARE than this! Shown here, for your viewing pleasure, is this original 1897 DRACULA Hardback Book By Bram Stoker - First Edition! Yes, this baby recently sold on eBay for $4,050.00. Published in Westminster, by the Archibald Constable and Company © 1897. This is the second issue with an advertisement in the back for Stoker's "The Shoulder of Shasta". This impression followed the first issue ( published on May 26, 1897 ) by a few months. Bram Stoker died April 20th, 1912 & sadly did not live long enough to see Dracula's immense cultural impact, and its many permutations in print and on the screen. According to literary historians Nina Auerbach and David Skal in the Norton Critical Edition, the novel has become more significant for modern readers than it was for contemporary Victorian readers, most of whom enjoyed it just as a good adventure story; it only reached its broad iconic legendary classic status later in the 20th century when the movie versions appeared.
"The Dead Un-Dead" was one of Stoker's original titles for Dracula, and up until a few weeks before publication, the manuscript was titled simply "The Un-Dead". Stoker's "Notes for Dracula" show that the name of the count was originally "Count Wampyr", but while doing research, Stoker became intrigued by the name "Dracula", after reading William Wilkenson's book Account of the Principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia with Political Observations Relative to Them ( London 1820 ), which he found in the Whitby Library, and consulted a number of times during visits to Whitby in the 1890s. The name Dracula was the family name of the descendants of Vlad II of Wallachia, who took the name "Dracul" after being invested in the Order of the Dragon in 1431. In the Romanian language, the word dracul can mean either "the dragon" or, especially in the present day, "the devil".

Book Review - ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER By Seth Grahame-Smith
Following the success of his bestselling book, "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies", Seth Grahame-Smith wrote a new story titled "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter". Now I have to admit that while the "Zombie" book was getting a lot of media hype I was thinking about reading it, but never did. So recently, while I was making my weekly trip to the library, I saw this "Vampire" book & I instantly knew I had to check it out!! I mean, it's got Abraham Lincoln AND Vampires, ha! I really love watching the History Channel & Lincoln has always been a favorite subject. This book got me very curious.
The basic concept of this book is that in Lincoln's lifetime Vampires existed & he knew about them. He got his first proof of their existence when they killed his Mother. He later vowed to avenge her death. He started by reading everything he could get his hands on to learn more about them. He also trained himself to throw an axe & perfectly hit a target. This became his main weapon of choice. By the time he was in his teens he had killed his very first creature ( It's important to note that he learned to call them "creatures" because they are "undead" & not human ). The story goes through his entire life & the way it's written is very much like a real "history book". Actual facts of Lincoln's life are intertwined with Vampyre Lore. But the cool thing is that you never feel it's a gimmick but it makes the book that much more believable. Overall, the storyline is very well written & quite enjoyable. I loved it & was very surprised with a few twists & turns that the book presented. Plus, the ending is very unpredictable & kind of clever.
In closing, I have to say that if you love Vampires or "American President" History, then you'll love this book & I suggest you either purchase it from your favorite Bookstore or go hit your local Library. Also, down below is a "ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER" Wallpaper Background you can use to brighten your desktop.

THE HUNGER - Classic 1983 Vampire Horror Movie with David Bowie
Today's post is sort of a trip down memory lane..... 1980's Style! Back in 1983, Warner Bros released a cool Vampire horror movie that has since become a total CULT Classic. We're talking about THE HUNGER, starring David Bowie, Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon. Shown here are some original vintage movie posters the WB used at that time to promote the film.
The basic story was about a few modern-day Vampires, set in the 80's, New York City. Catherine Deneuve plays Miriam, a centuries-old Vampire capable of bestowing the gift of immortality on her lovers. David Bowie plays her current paramour, John. For some unknown reason "John" starts to age very rapidly. It's at this time that he visits the clinic of scientist Sarah Roberts (Susan Sarandon), who had recently published a book on reversing the aging process. Now I don't want to give away too much of the plot. Basically, I'm saying this is a must watch for vamp fans!
One really great thing about this film is it's movie soundtrack. In it, you get to hear "Bela Lugosi is Dead" by Bauhaus. Please be sure to check out this amazing video of the original movie trailer:
OK, by now you know what a great Vampire movie this is. So, to celebrate here's a VAMPYRE wallpaper background to brighten your desktop, enjoy. Oh yeah, if you also look below it you can find a LINK BUTTON to get an amazing price on the recent DVD:

VAMPIRE TALES a Love Story - Vintage 1970's Comic Book
Here's a short comic book story you're going to really enjoy. It's titled "BATS" & it was originally from Vampire Tales #7 (August 1974). It's pretty interesting for two reasons: 1. It's a great Vampire love story & 2. The entire drama is told using pictures with no words. Now, we're all so used to "reading comics" that it does take a little time to adjust to. But go ahead, check it out! It was penciled by Paul Gulacy.

BARNABAS COLLINS - DARK SHADOWS Vintage TV Show Toys and Collectibles
Since we're a VAMPYRE FAN BLOG there is actually NO way we could not mention Barnabas Collins! This Vampire appeared on the classic TV show "DARK SHADOWS". Dark Shadows was a gothic soap opera that originally aired weekdays on the ABC television network from June 27th, 1966 to April 2nd, 1971.
The series became hugely popular when, a year into its run, Vampire Barnabas Collins ( played by Actor Jonathan Frid ) appeared. Dark Shadows also featured werewolves, ghosts, zombies, man-made monsters, witches, warlocks, time travel (both into the past and into the future), and a parallel universe.
Dark Shadows was distinguished by its vividly melodramatic performances, atmospheric interiors, memorable storylines, and an unusually adventurous music score. Now regarded as somewhat of a camp classic, it continues to enjoy intense cult status among its followers. As a child, Johnny Depp was so obsessed with Barnabas Collins that he wanted to be him. So now, Depp is collaborating with Tim Burton on a movie adaptation, in which he will play Barnabas.
Shown here are a few Vintage "Dark Shadows" toys, books, & collectibles that were made around the time the TV show originally aired. The 1st photo is the cover to "Famous Monsters of Filmland" magazine, issue #59. The 2nd pic is the Official BARNABAS COLLINS / DARK SHADOWS Board Game made by Milton Bradley! ( I have always loved those vintage-style graphics! ). Next up is this extremely cool BARNABAS VAMPIRE VAN Plastic Model kit by MPC. Well, it actually looks more like a Hot Rod Car to me but why argue, ha! It looks like it was made to deliver coffins & I bet every little kid back then begged their Mom for this toy! The 4th photo shows one of my favorite toys growing up, the Magic Slate! It was made by Whitman. Speaking of that company they also made the next item, the 2nd DARK SHADOWS TV SHOW Board Game. After that we get to see a Wax Wrapper for the DARK SHADOWS Bubble Gum Cards. These trading cards today are extremely hard to find! OK, now the last photo, it shows 2 Vintage Paperback Books. One of them is a Cookbook, which is kinda funny! They actually made a TON of books back then that revolved around this show. There are even a few that are still in print today.
